Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science“Exploring Social Sciences with a Mass Communication Major”

“Exploring Social Sciences with a Mass Communication Major” is the title of the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for July 5. Cailey McDermott, editor of both The Mountain Mail and The Chaffee County Times will talk about communications in general, and especially how-to in a small town.

Cailey will discuss how to send an email, how to leave a voicemail, how to lead with kindness and how to file a complaint. She’ll touch on other factors of her job such as fact versus opinions – opinions do not need to be factual. Her comments will address press releases and their inherent bias and their nature – they’re announcements, not news. Finally, she’ll address the all-important fact that news must be timely.

Cailey grew up in Vermont where she attended St. Michael’s College graduating in 2009. Moving to Salida in 2010 she worked as a reporter for The Mountain Mail until 2013. She was owner of Colorado Central Magazine from 2021-2023. Editor of The Mountain Mail was her next step before adding Editor of The Chaffee County Times. Husband Andre Wilkins teaches at Salida High School. Daughter, Dilse, at 6.5 will enter first grade this year. The family loves to camp, bike and swim.

Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science on the first Sunday of each month at A church, 419 D Street, Salida, CO. Each presentation is informative and features a science topic that is understandable by both scientists and non-scientists. The doors open a 9:30 a. m. and the talk beings promptly at 10 a. m. Admission is free, and the public is welcome.
